I am a problem-solver with twenty years of on-the-job training and experience. My first career adventure was as an administrative and executive assistant working for a grocery retail headquarters then for two different area hospitals' administration offices. Experience includes compliance, policy, procedure and various areas of sales both in industrial and retail settings. As an office assistant, I created quotes, newsletters, mailing lists and memorandums. Data entry, time reporting, advertisements and sales figures were also part of my job.
After graduating from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Arts in English, I began my next career as a technical writer. I wrote specifications, help files, release notes and web content and created online help systems. My areas of expertise range from medical to utility to dealership to governmental software.
10 years experience as administrative and executive assistant supporting from one to three vice presidents or executive managers. Working in the corporate offices of hospital administration, retail, audit and compliance and material handling taught me how to conduct myself in an executive environment and what tools were needed to succeed there. Reviewing resumes and interviewing potential secretaries became a part of my job as I moved up the ranks as an executive assistant. At times I was called upon to write employee manuals for the staff.
Upon graduating from UAB, I began my second career as a technical writer. My first job was as a junior technical writer for a start-up company where I was promoted within a year. I learned templates, how to review specifications, write drafts from specifications, evaluate initial designs for the software and create user guides.
The last 10 years as a technical writer have provided me the experience I need to create technical manuals from requirements, screen mock-ups or from completed screens. Additionally, I can update websites, wikis or online help systems with any new software information. In depth interviews with the developers, quality assurance or any other source matter expert can be added to a long list of assets I bring to project where technical writing is required.
